I have a 1968 CLIPPER Runabout 16'.
I has a POS chrysler55 outboard on it. Im looking to change it out but Iam wondering if anybody knows if it the boat will take a 100hp Johnson. Im told the Johnson weighs 275lb. Not sure if this boat can handle it.
Anybody have idea.

Well, look at the capacity plate for max horsepower. Your Chrysler 55 weighs around 156-160 so the Johnson will be over 100 pounds heavier.

If your hull is rated for 100 horsepower and you feel uncomfortable, put a couple of cement blocks on the transom to see how low she will sit at rest with the Johnson

100 HP on a 16' boat can be overpowered, depending on the type of hull and what she is rated for. Normally a Bass Boat would be rated for that power, but a light runabout would be rated for 85HP or maybe less. Can you post a picture of the hull?

And by the way: You 55 is most likely not a POS, you just don't understand it. I have three of them and they are simple to work on and easy to maintain. Before you decide to swap: Go over to the Force/Chrysler forum and describe your problem(s) we can help and unless completely trashed, the engine will give you many hours of pleasure

Sorry, I cannot see that picture clearer. Looks like a runabout, vice a bassboat. Likely 100HP will overpower it, which might be fun for a while, until the transom starts to crack off.

I will check the tag but Im pretty sure it doesn't have a max hp rating on it. Just weight capacity.

Back in the day I had one very similar to it. Standard power was a 40 with a 60 as an option. The 40 was a perfect size for that hull.

My friend had a 16 Winner, of about that age. Looks a lot like that boat. We had an 85HP Merc on it, but whenever you hit a wave the hull in the bow would noticably flex. Pretty scary, but it never cracked. I would stick with a max of 75HP.

Yeah I think 75hp might be the best.
