Outboard engine offset, have you done it? Is it necessary?

Does anyone here know anything about offsetting an outboard engine, I.e. not putting it in the middle of the transom but to one side slightly?

I ask as when I was in a local boat shop the owner said to me that I should make sure I offset my engine to help prevent chine walking.

Is this necessary and is this something you have heard of or done?

If it makes any difference this is with reference to my 16 footer ski boat with a 79 140 I6, and also when putting the 220 V6 EFI onto my new 17foot boat.

Cheers all

Thanks. Thought it seemed a bit strange, no one else seemed to know anything about it.
