What is a proper operating temptature for most / any outboard motor?
And please inform if the following is inaccurate.

Engine begins cold, when started it should produce a good stream from telltale.
Indicating impeller is operating as designed.
This is not water comming out from the "cylinder/head" section yet.(?).
As engine warms, then thermostat should open at about ____?____ degrees F.
At which time water should be provided to "cylinder/head" section.

Is it correct to estimate that a stuck or failed closed themostat can only be determined by temp. reading, or engine damage/ failure?

I have not mentioned serial numbers yet as am looking for 'the industries standard" generic range.

You want a generic answer, a generic answer you get. On most engines, water flows through certain sections of the powerhead at all times, regardless of thermostat position, and goes on out the exhaust to keep it cool. The thermostat controls the rest of the system. Usually with a pressure relief valve.

My experience has been that when a thermostat fails, it fails in the open position. Extremely rarely have I seen one stuck closed. Temp would be the only valid test, other than removing the 'stat and put it in hot water. But that doesn't mean it will work tomorrow.
