Outboard for Lund Explorer 1600 SS

Guys -<br />I'm looking at buying a 1600 Lund Explorer SS w/ either a 60hp 4-stroke Mercury EFI, or either a Merc or Yamaha 75hp (carb'd).<br /><br />The weight from the 60 to the 75 is an additional ~150lbs and you lose the EFI. First, I don't want to underpower the boat, so I am swaying towards the 75. Thoughts?<br /><br />Also, I grew up w/ Mercs, but I have heard some not so good things about merc (recalls, random testing, etc) and some no so good things about yamaha (test each unit before it ships). They are ALMOST the same outboard, but not quite.<br /><br />First 60 or 75 hp. And if 75...thoughts on the Merc or Yamaha 4-stokes.<br /><br />Thanks!

The max horsepower for the SS is 90 HP.

fullerton,<br /><br />I do not think you are going to be happy with a 60. You put a couple of people and their gear in this thing and it is going to turn into a slug.<br /><br />The 75 sounds like a good fit. If the 90 is the same weight as the 75, I'd go that route. But, that's me. <br /><br />The resale on the 75 will be better than a 60.

I have a 2001 1650 Explorer with a Merc 60 EFI and I'm pretty happy with it. top end about 34 and planes out pretty quick. And I really like the 4 stroke. The recall was due to a bad decision to use some rocker arms that were below spec on Rockwell. To their credit, Mercury just lifted the old motor off and dropped a new one on. A 75 might get you 40 mph. I think a 90 would be a little more excitement that I'd want, although it might be fun to try.

If you go with the F75, you might as well get the F90. It's only $200-300 more, and basically the same outboard with 15 more HP.<br /><br />The Merc EFI60 sits on a Yamaha F60 powerhead.

If I would've had my head on straight, I would have purchased the 1650 last year w/ a 60hp 4-stroke, but I didn't.<br /><br />The 1650, dry, weighs 880 lbs, where as the 1600 weighs 1035, so I am not fully confident that the 60 will deliver enough juice when I have peoples in the boat, full of fuel, and a filled livewell...w/ gear. So then I started looking at the heavier 75 (~150lbs more).<br /><br />Do you think the hole shot would be the same for both motors on this boat w/ the IPS hull...with the only difference being top end speed?<br /><br />Thanks!

I was wondering about the weight when I saw it was rated 90hp. My 1650 is rated for 75. The new 1600 is about 4" shorter and 2" wider than the 1650 which I guess could account for the added weight. I agree that the 60 might be a little underpowered for this rig, although I don't think it would be a huge disappointment.

fullerton,<br /><br />There is more to it than just horsepower. Take a look at the prop size differences between the 60 and the 75-90. <br /><br />Bigger props (diameter) mean better planing and load carrying capabilities.<br /><br />Remember, boats never lose weight, they always gain it over time. That dry weight will go way up once you get it rigged and stuff stashed here and there.

The prop used on the 75hp is greater, which does allow for more water displacement, unfortunately I want this to troll down, so I may play w/ the props a bit to see what the best fit is....or just throw an electric off the back.<br /><br />Now on the 75. It looks like Merc rev's out the engine at the top end more than Yamaha, other than that, does anyone of any major design or quailty differences between Merc and Yamaha?
