Hi everybody! I've just bought a boat with an outboard motor that needs a fair bit of work, mostly renewing wires where insulation is badly perished. It has a cover on it indicating that it is a Johnson 140 hp but the ex owner tells me it's actually an Evinrude 90 hp. The ID plate on the left hand mount bracket is mostly missing but I have attached it anyway. The number from the plug on the engine is clear but I have no idea how to look that up. Could one of the experts please tell me what sort of motor this is please?

It is the 90 HP version from about 1990.----I can not tell for sure but I would be concerned if that gasket is on wrong.-----Do a compression test before you spend any beer tokens on this thing.------Note-----It appears that many boats in poor condition are being offered for sale these pandemic days.-----Lots of eager / novice buyers paying top dollar for junk.

Thank you for your reply but I was really hoping somebody would just give me the make, hp, and year of the motor from the information I supplied. No abouts or guessing is asked for and no broad ranging comments about buying junk boats is wanted. So please, as per my original post, if you know your stuff and can identify the motor from the information that would be appreciated; if you cannot then do the right thing and don't bother commenting about my boat buying prowess and the general state of boat buying in a pandemic or whatever. Make your own topic and go for it by all means, just don't hijack mine. Thanks.

I read where if you don’t have an id plate a DEALER can look it up by the serial number but as we have no actual dealer anymore but the engine is no longer in production it’s a bit of a delema

Yes, just my luck, anyway I was hoping somebody still had access to the database. Never know, fingers crossed, let's see what happens.
