Outboard Jet's - Recommendations?

I've recently come on to the market of looking for a new Outboard Jet for a 19 foot North River - Originally had a 140 jet Mercury.
Yamaha vs. Mercury - the experts I've talked with say they're both good, It seems like some like one, some the other.

I've heard that you don't want to get one of the new electronic fuel injection type motors with a jet on it (Mercury EFI, Yamaha V-Max). I guess they work great for a while, but the injection system is run by a computer chip that adjusts according to RPM, engine load, etc. A motor with a jet runs more erratically than a prop, and after a while the chip gets confused and things get really screwed up.

Any thoughts, Any suggestions?

I believe the biggest Merc jet available these days is the 115 horse carbed. They don't offer an EFI or Optimax in jet configuration. I'm not sure what's in Yamaha's line up.

I suppose I should have asked which model North River you had, wetaline.(In or outboard) The Sportster is currently available with the 175 or 240 SportJet, but I don't know if it's a bolt-in swap for the 140.

Just to clarify, the largest jet outboard Mercury currently makes is the 80 (115hp powerhead). I did not realize Merc ever made a 140 jet outboard. Must be 200+ hp at the powerhead to put out 140 at the jet. What year is yours? Yammy's biggest is a 150hp powerhead/105 jet hp motor.

Merc makes the V6 140 and has for several years,as a factory jet.At my last look they are not yet offering the DFI versions of this engine in jet form probably because of the water filration that DFI incorporates. As you likely know ,these v6s have perfomed well on the rivers here in the northwest.I would expect if Yamaha has a comparable product, you would be happy with that as well, but product support for these engines might leave you wanting on down the road.Chose your dealer carfully.

Has anyone heard about the 200hp EFI or Vmax having trouble after a couple years w/ the electronics/computer chip when theres a jet on the lower unit?

Local dealer sez last year for factory Merc 140 jet (200hp powerhead) was 1999. 115hp/80 jet is the biggest motor currently available from Mercury. There are almost no jet outboards in my area, so I'd never have guessed they used to make such monsters!

Re: Outboard Jet's - Recommendations?

Your right on the Jet rate for the Mercury.... They dont offer the Jet rating on the bigger engines anymore... But they do put the pump on the bigger power heads still..

Infact this year they came out with a new High Flow pump and is about 2 grates wider (more intake).. w/ a more efficient pump - combined this offers more power, thus lower needed rpms, and better gas milage...

- talked to a guide w/ the new lower unit and he says it takes a 1,000 rpms to gain the same power as before.

Theres a lot of the 200hp outboard jets Oregon.. pretty comon actually!

Note: that would be 1,000 rpms less to gain the same power...

Re: Outboard Jet's - Recommendations?

All the jet units for all the manufactures come from the same place.SAN LEANDRO OUTBOARD JETS AKA SPECIALTY MFG.Kits are available to convert almost any o.b. over 25 hp to a jet. However buying this kit and installing it on your new DFI MERC or PFI YAMADOG could void at least some ,if not all of your warranty.Failures I have seen on jets in general have been mechanical with the exception of VRO driven OMCs on their cross v engines.Oil pump in my opinion can't handle the radical rpm fluctuations.
