outboard lower unit oil and I/O lower unit oil

can you use outboard lower unit oil in a I/O lower unit? what are the differences between the two?

The are basically three types of gear lube a basic petroleum 90# oil, Type C for OMC electric shift units 80# I believe and synthetic gear lube all meet the GL 5 specification, don't mix any with the other type but all will work in modern stern drives

so if i wanted to use outboard gear lube, just be sure whats in my lower unit is drained out?

Helps to bring up just what outdrive, as old bulletproof Volvo's use straight 30 or 40wt

its a pre-alpha I think. as its from 73.

Mercs Hi Performance gear lube is recommended (By Merc) in all Merc IO's.
It's synthetic and about as good as it gets for Merc outdrives.
