From the top of the transom where the motor will sit to the true bottom. On a typical V bottom for a single motor, from the top center of the transom to the bottom of the V.

A "long" shaft motor usually sits on a transom that measures about 20 3/4". A "long" shaft motor is refered to as 20", a standard or short shaft is 15" and an extra long shaft motor is 25". Roughly.

Be sure that the measurement is vertical. If the transom is tilted, as many are, the measurement will not be correct if you measure on the transom surface.

Good luck. :)
