I have a situation. The Merc 80 IL3 on my little boat is too much power and weight for it. The boat max rating is 65. I have the necessary mechanical apptitiude to change it but I have not done it before. I am looking for pointers on what to do and what not to and some reccomendations on replacement power. What are the outboard options in this horsepower range? I would prefer to stay with power trim and tilt and a multi cylinder configuration that is on the lighter side. Thanks for your replies and opinions.

If I put this in the wrong place I am sorry.

Re: Outboard Motor replacement

In two stroke carbed engines:
Evinrude/Johnson 50 HP two-cylinders are about 211.
Newer Merc 50-60 three cylinders are 204 - 219
50 - 60 Yamaha three cylinders are 198 - 228
Evinrude E-tec 50 & 60 are 240

Most four strokes will be heavier in nearly every class.

Maybe an old Johnyrude 3cyl 65hp-70hp style motor, like the old "Stinger" 70 if you can find a clean one.
