Outboard mounted trolling motor?

I've been thinking about getting one of these outboard mounted trolling motors. Not for trolling really, but I think it would be great for docking/trailering/beaching, and emergencies. (I do have a 30 year old outboard) Why is it that I never hear about outboard mounted trolling motors? It seems like a really good idea to me. How much do you think something like that would affect my top speed? Are there any other brands of the same thing?

No reverse, ZmOz. Useless for docking.

For real trolling it is controllable from the helm. . .only advantage I can see, and expensive to boot.

These Navigator motors do in fact claim to have reverse. My 2 cents of speculation: Won't be as maneuverable as a regular trolling motor- not as convenient while docking though probably adequate depending on how maneuverable the host motor is. Might make getting on plane a little more of a chore since there will be a little more drag, though once on plane should no longer be an issue. I wonder if they troll a little more stable than a regular troller attached to the transom because the motor is still in. Might make me a little more careful in the shallows since the main prop is still down there, though it certainly couldn't exactly cause a high speed hit to it. On the other hand, leaving the main motor down would add a little drag to the troller. Might not make much difference at the low speed, though. Seems like a neat idea, so long as it came at a competitive price. I imagine you'd want to be careful to not accidentally power it up while cruising, since you probably would not hear it or see it from the helm. It could drain the battery as well as overheat without the water bathing it.

Minn Kota made one for a few years, think they discontinued them. I looked at them. $600+, must sit at helm to use, main motor must be completely lowered- no good for shallows. Trolling motor was above the bottom of the hull, thought that would cut down on effectivness.

The controles can be mounted on the console and have a variable speed controle both forward and reverse. Only suitable for freshwater use tho.
http://www.minnkotamotors.com/products/motors/frames.asp?selectionCode=en11
Regs,
Erik
Where can I buy one of those? I'm either going to get one of these kinds of trolling motors or a cheap used standard trolling motor, to be put out only when the main engine is broken. After my engine died last time I went out in the middle of the lake I found that it is nearly impossible to paddle my boat...if someone hadn't towed me in I'd probably still be out there. :p

ZmOz,

Go to Wal Mart and buy a cheapo Minn Kota transom mount motor.

Tilt it up when you're not using it and forget about it.

If I go with a standard trolling motor I will be keeping it under the bow or something for use only in emergencies, my boat certainly isn't a fishing boat and I don't think it would look very good hanging off the back. How much does a cheap trolling motor usually go for at someplace like walmart? (closest walmart to me is about 30 miles away)

A 12volt transom mount starts at $80, up to $200.
