Outboard not used for 4 years what should I consider

Hi,

I have a bit of a restoration project going on with an 18ft fishing boat I have. I last used it in the water over 6 years ago and am now looking to get it up and running again.

The main area of concern is the engine (a Selva 60HP 2 stroke St Tropez dated 1998). It only had about 100 hrs use when I bought it with the boat and I racked up a further 50 hrs (I never had any issues with the engine) A company move meant I had to mothball the boat with the engine attached and it has been stored inland on a farm. I am now in a position to get the boat back up and running and was wondering what things I should consider prior to starting the engine up. i.e does it need a complete strip down or is it simpler than that.

Any advice would be gratefully recieved. I am aiming to keep a photo diary of the work and will happily share it out.

Regards

Sakman

Remove all old fuel from every area of motor, tank, fuel system. Check/service/replace water pump impeller, new spark plug, fresh gas with Stabil Marine fuel treatment, should start right up, hope, hope!

Welcome to iboats. :)

Here is a link to some information that will help you out. I am not familiar with a Selva however, this link applies to most any outboard. http://forums.iboats.com/showthread.php?t=158086

I would also spray a little wd 40 into the cylinders before starting and use the manual start to make sure the pistons are not frozen. If she pulls pretty easy, reinstall the spark plug, cross your fingers and go for it.
Good luck

keep it fun--keep it safe!
