Outboard position for shrink wrap

This is the first year with a boat that has power tilt and trim. I have winterized the boat and will have it shrink wrapped on Monday. My question is I have to have the OB raised to trailer it back and forth between my home and the shop. I spoke with one of the guys there and he said just raise it enough to trailer it back and forth. Now the motor would have to stay in this position for the winter. I am a little leery leaving the motor anything but vertical. In the past the OB I have owned did not have power tilt and trim so it was easy to move the motor with the battery out. Any suggestions would be great. The OB is a Merc 150.

no problem, raise engine to tow it home as high as you want. when home just release pressure screw to lower engine to vertical and then retighten screw, but beware and only release pressure very slowly or it will drop like a brick. when ready for summer it will be ok coz your gonna unwrap the boat anyway.look in manual for where the screw is, its on the bracket somewhere. happy winterization

Do they shrink wrap over the motor? Many places here wrap the lower unit and prop. When done this way, leaving the motor vertical is not crucial as water cannot get into the prop hub.

PhilnJack thanks for the info i will look at my manual for that pressure screw.
Sangerwaker the guy did mention he could wrap the lower unit of the motor. The ones I have seen primarily have just the upper portion of the motor wrapped.
Thanks again to both of you for the information.

Rustyc

Re: Outboard position for shrink wrap

I'm amazed and kind of delighted that so many folk in the US go boating when the weather causes all this grief... winterizing, shrink wrapping etc. Here in Aus even poor old Melbourne-based Dunarunna can go boating summer or winter with little effort... except he might have to take 2000lbs in extra wind proof clothes in winter. I'm sure if us Aussies had to go through through all this BS, I'm sure many of us would not bother. So "good on ya" to all those in the USA who boat in areas where you can't boat in winter.

You should have a power swithch on the motor itself, usually on the lower right side. A couple of good garbage bags and duct tape work also.

You may want to make it so the powerhead cover breaths a little. Sealing tight can trap moisture and make it worse than leaving uncovered.

I made a cover for my motor out of some "House Wrap' This kept the sun and snow off the motor but still allowed it to breath. Seems to work fine!

Before you shrink wrap or something like that get a can of CRC or WD-40 and take off the engine cover and completely spray the engine and components, then put the cover back on. I still think a garbage bag on the lower end is all you need to do.
I think the previous poster is talking about TYVEC or something similar so that it breathes.
