Outboard position while trailering

I'm fairly new to boating with a large outboard with power tilt/trim. The other day I trailered the motor with it tilted up, with the tilt cylinder holding the motor up. I suspect I blew out a seal on the tilt cylinder from doing this. Is this not the correct way to position a motor for towing? What is the motor supposed to rest on (besides transom saver, which I just ordered) when towing?

Yes. Road bounce with heavy weight Motor probably blew its seal. And, down she came.

Installing a Transom saver bar (from trailer to lower motor) is a good thing.

For my boat/trailer combo with heavy weight Force 120 HP engine, I simply made my own Transom bar. re:

Tip: When lowering engine down to the Transom bar, only let the engine "gently rest" on the bar. If one over pressures onto the bar and one hits road bounce while towing, the forces on trailer's rear can pull the boat further back (on the trailer). Thus, always best to gently (firmly) rest the boat engine on the transom bar. But, don't apply too much pressure.

Thanks for the info, exactly what I was thinking with the transom saver too. The motor will stay tilted up but just leaks out when going up.

Do I need special tools to reinstall a new seal? Is it a hard job?
