I have a 1995 40hp Mercury on my Basstracker. Great motor and I have never had any issues with it.

This year I took it out of storage and did all the regular maintenance to it as usual and put it on a water hose to run it a bit and noticed that the propeller will not turn when the motor is in a locked down position.

Checking everything over, I moved the motor to a half-tilt position and the propeller began to turn in proportion to the speed adjustment. However, again when I returned it to the straight down locked position as it would be in to run on the water, the propeller again will not turn.

Any advice/help greatly appreciated.

The issue happened while OB was running on muffs, hose whatever when idling at neutral or geared forward ? If at neutral is quite normal for prop to spin freely or not to do so.

I'm a little confused. When trying to turn the prop, is the engine running, or no? Is the engine in neutral?

Welcome to iBoats! :welcome:

It sounds like a problem with the shift rod adjustment.

You mean it won’t turn when you put it into gear ? Or just it doesn’t free wheel ? Hopefully you don’t mean by hand, haha.
As mentioned above if it’s just when I’m neutral...sometimes they do, sometimes they don’t, depending on angle etc.

40HP Prop Not Turning

Looking for some advice on an issue I am having with my propeller not moving when the engine is in the locked down running position.

Its a 1995 40hp Mercury.

Looks like a copy/paste from the 1st to the 2nd thread. too.

Merged and moved to the Merc section cuz it ain't a prop problem.
