Outboard Size and Brand Recommendation

I have a small 14 foot 1972 fiberglass tri-hull that I am restoring. Down to the hull now and planning for a new engine. The plaque on the transom states 40 hp max.
I will be using the boat for fishing, and maybe pulling a small inflatable behind for fun on occasion.
There is no steering mechanism, so it I will be purchasing one of the hand steering models.

I need advice on a good size motor that won't break my bank, yet will provide reasonable pleasure for my boat. I don't want to purchase a 25 hp if I am only going to be disappointed, and I don't want to spend 6K or more on a 40 hp if the weight is going to outweigh the benfits. I am pretty set on purchasing a new motor for reliability.

Any advice will be greatly appreciated.

Re: Outboard Size and Brand Recommendation

If it's rated for 40 and being 14' trihull, I would not go less. Check out craigslist or kijiji or your local ads for a reasonable outboard. Brand doesn't matter a lot, just as long as it's in good running condition. Any pics of your boat? What make is it? I have a 14'9 Sunray trihull and it's rated for 55hp. I have a 45 on it now and it's plenty for what I need it for. I get 55kms (34.2 mph) Of course I would love to go with more hp but my Johnny runs perfect.

Hope this helps.

I wouldn't go any less than a 35 which seem to be alot more commmon than 40's from what I see on CL. I wouldn't buy new either. Usually you buy the motor and get the boat for free. So if your thinking of putting a 6k motor on an old trihull you might as well get a new boat. You ought to be able to find a nice use 35 or 40 for around 1k.

And even though the DOT recommended hp rating says 40, and I'm not saying you should, but, you may even find a nice 50 hp quite reasonable. ;)
