I have a 14ft sylvan deep v on which I run a 69 evinrude fatswin 18hp (sh shaft). When (and if) I can someday afford to buy a new 4 stroke, what would be the optimum size tiller motor? I've been looking at the Tohatsu 9.8, 15, & 18. I'm a fisherman, so I'm not interested in pulling skiers. I just want the lightest, cheapest motor that will still plane the boat. I fish small lakes, big lakes, and Lake Michigan (for perch mostly). The boat is rated up to 35hp.

Re: outboard size

I'd like to clarify that I've never owned or operated any other motors besides my 69 and 61 evinrude 18hps, my 71 johnson seahorse 4hp, and a 50s johnson 10 hp. I have no clue as to what the newer motors, especially 4 cycles, can do and its hard around here to test each model on my boat.

I purchased a new 4 stroke 18hp Nissan from onlineoutboards in 2008 for my 16 ft Lowe jon boat. I fish from small to large lakes in Ill and Wi. For me its been the perfect motor.

Just a question, but is there a reason why you are wanting to eventually get a four stroke? The old Johnsons are generally pretty reliable and easy to work on.

But to answer your question, I would say a 15hp would be the least I would go.

Re: outboard size

I love my old evinrude, but I'm thinking 4 cycle primarily for fuel economy, clean running, and quiet.

thanks, guys
