Re: Outboard sizing Q??

Bob: thanks for the info, I didn't know that boats could be rated differently like that.

To the rest of you: I was just screwing with you about the 50 Hp!! I'm picking up a used 25 Hp from a local dealer. Lol People get so worked up online no matter what kind of forum you go to.

But thanks to all the people who posted technical info and not just your opinion on me being crazy for wanted to put a larger motor on my boat.

I know rules and regs are for your saftey, but they're also made to be broken!!

I would imagine you might look at this differently if you or a loved one
were seriously injured or killed in an accident involving a over powered
boat.

I know it is sad when anyone is hurt, but I dont see over powered boats as an issue for safety.....as it is i hear of one or two accidents a year where there are even injuries in a boat wreck..i am i live near Long island sound and in the greater new york city metropolis!!!! thats a LOT of boats and people...

boating deaths are rare....auto deaths have to be 1000 X greater!!!

and then when there is a boating death how many times is it ebcause of an over powered boat??

this is just to obscure to worry about.....

I have never even seen a boating accident. and all that i have heard of have been people on single boat accidents...

I dont think people getting hurt in a skiing accident qualifies as a boating accident in the sense we are talking..

I really have a hard time understanding the notion that a 14 foot boat with a 50 hp on it, that can do 35 mph!! is more dangerous than a 20 foot boat with 600 hp on it!!!!!!!!! than can do 80 mph!!!

I am scratching my head about the worries some people think up

just one mans view I guess

The world is littered with countless Lawyers dying for a layup case involving an accident with a clearly over-rated motor on a boat.

Re: Outboard sizing Q??

Can't recall the exact thread, but there was a young man who had the same question regarding a very similar setup. He did end up overpowering the boat with the blessing of several. Someone added a comment to the post a couple of years later that he drowned himself and his family. I don't know if anyone ever verified that it was the same guy or even the same rig, but that's an example of why everyone was so vocal. I don't know that anyone's worked up, we're merely concerned for your, and others', safety. That was pretty funny about the 50 though.

It's ok. We got a 50 HP motor on it just a little bit ago I got real cheap. Works great, just had the boat out

Won't seem quite the bargain when it sinks to the bottom along with the transom !!!!
If you are looking for experienced people to tell you that overpowering is OK then you are in the wrong place.
Just my thoughts though and not meant to offend.

Well, you sure had me going, Ditka. I apologize for thinking what I did about your wisdom as a boater and now think the same about you as a joker. :)

Design is one thing, ?marginal Engineering? is another.

GOOGLE marginal Engineering and let me know what you find.....

Materials cost drives product application. The days of over engineered have long since passed.

Props to you bob, I like your style.

And about lawyers and accidents; one of the reasons this country is so screwed up is because people don't take responsibility for they're own actions. Of course your going to be legally liable if you ignore any ratings or warnings, but only a few people will actually admit they screwed up.

Dealing with boating accidents, I agree with bob. I race motocross, and ride sportbikes on the street, and there is nothing more dangerous than the other people on the road not paying attention. I'm sure the same can be said for boating.

And PLEASE do not post that this thread has deviated from the original question!!

Yes. Where the helm is makes a lot of difference. Often the same hull is rated for twice the HP as a remote steered boat over a tiller. Center of moment, center of gravity, etc. The classic Boston Whaler 13 is rated for 20HP as a tiller boat and 40HP as a console boat.

The point is that trying to outsmart the engineers who built a boat is about as smart as trying brain surgery with a chainsaw. Most people have no idea what factors are involved in keeping a boat safe.

There is no fact, none, that makes it anything but stupid to overpower a boat, God help you at 100%.

I wish I had the link at the tip of my fingers, but there is a USCG formula for determining maximum HP. It does indeed involve tiller vs. remote control in addition to (If I recall correctly), length, width at waterline and transom height. Just for fun I ran it for my boat and it came out exactly what the rating on the placard is.

I have an interesting issue in that I run a outboard jet. We all know that the jet puts out a lot less HP at the water than a prop - some say as much as 30%. My current engine is right at the maximum HP, but I wouldn't hesitate to put a larger engine on there because I know it would be within the HP rating. BUT, I would check with my insurance company first and get verification of coverage in writing.

Ditka:

You can break all the Laws you want but one, ? the law of physics. Keep trying to bust that one, when you pay the fine on this one you can send a video of the aftermath. Might be worth a chuckle, making all of this worthwhile. LoL
