I need a small outboard for a boat I just bought (6-10 hp). What would be a good place to look. The ones on ebay and craigslist are so expensive and never seem to be local to me.

Also, classifieds in some magazines(hunting, fishing, or boating)

Marinas may have some.

Bulletin boards in some stores too.

Well, if you can live with old reliable iron/aluminum, try the Webvertize ads on the Antique Outboard Motor Club site: http://www.aomci.org.
Then check to see if there is a local/state chapter in your area, visit their swap meets and you might be surprised what you can find. But beware, bringing home an old fixer-upper outboard is a lot like feeding cats...they bring others to your door.

Yeah, I saw itstippy's post on what to do w/ his gold mine. And, I would love to buy from a fellow iboater. But the issue is that I am here in good ole' north Ga. and I beleive he is in wisconsin. I've been looking in the classifieds but everybody around here doesn't want to get rid of grandpa's old motor.
And the one from iboats has mainly motors from this decade. Way to far out of my budget.

I looked at the aomci thing and they all seem to be in Wisconsin.
How much would shipping be for a 8-10 horse from wisconsin to N Ga?

Ya know,
If I was smart I would have checked the post entitled "My new boat" The answer was right there. I just had not checked it in 2 days. Instead I went and posted this thread and went and searched all over the internet for a shipping quote. Now I feel like a complete idiot. I shot a PM to itstippy and am awaiting a reply.

If you like to travel south there are at least two AOMCI chapters in Florida. To give you an idea on shipping, I just sent a 57 Evinrude Fastwin 18 hp from Texas to New Joisey, in two pieces in two boxes, through FedEx for about $90. Steer clear of the brown truck folks if you can, they are very pricey and don't treat their freight kindly. There's also an outfit called Forward Air, they are highly regarded by some...you drop it at one large air terminal/airport and they fly it to another near you...not right to your door, but pretty good for very large/heavy stuff.

If it's "older" you are looking for, e-mail TwinCityOutboards for a listing. It might even be worth a trip up to the Tundra to see the "mountain" of old outboards in the yard. They are located in Shakopee, MN and not far from one the largest Casinos in the country. You could get lucky on both accounts.

Silvertip, Due to extenuating circumstances the trip to MN would not be possible. It probably would be next winter but I want the motor to use next spring and summer. And as for visiting the casino I am to young to visit one seeing as I'm only 13.

Well -- so much for that plan! I guess the best bet then would be for you to do the yard/garage sale routine and keep an eye on the classified ads in the local newspapers. You might also check the local auto stores and gas stations for a publication called "Boat Trader" (or something similar). Nearly every grocery store has a bulletin board out front where people post wanted and for sale stuff. I see outboards and boats on those boards quite often.
