Hi all this is my first time posting on this board but over the last few days I have been reading alot on it seeing as im a new boat owner.

I just bought a boat off a guy I know but the 15HP motor on it currently doesnt work and id like tot ry and fix it.

He said about a year ago, he was driving it and it started to have troubles, so he checked it out and found that cyl 2 was not getting a hot spark. So he cleaned it up and took it back out on the water, worked for a little bit but then had trouble again and suddenly died on him. He checked spark again and no spark this time (very weak he said). He replaced wires and also ground but nothing changed. It has compression so thats not a problem.

He basically concluded it was the magneto that had gone bad. To everyone does this sound like a correct diagnostic?

The engine specs, Sears GameFisher 15hp, Model 217586320, S# 7k 045338. Other then this info I dont know anything else. So if anyone has any more info that would be much appreciated.

I was able to find the part on sears part search but they have discontinued it. Would anyone know a location I can check to get this part or comparable one?

P.S
Sorry if I posted in the wrong section I looked at them all and this looked to be the correct one. If not could someone move it.

Re: Outboard spark problem

You have to put the decimal in the model number on the Sears site;

http://www.searspartsdirect.com/par...47/1305320?pathTaken=&prst=0&shdMod=217586320

It all sounds familiar - Seems most likely to be one of two things; a) there's a corroding ignition connection the previous owner never cleaned, and the thing is just waiting to be cleaned up, or b) the ignition modules failed one after the other. They are fixable if you are willing to de-pot, hack and solder, or replaceable if you got $200 - $250 to spend. If you turn that motor over with plug wires ungrounded, the modules can self destruct. Sign up for eskaoutboards : Eska Outboards Group they have all the info you'll need to get that thang runnin' again.
