Re: outboard suggestions

I'm guessing it's a 14' boat, not a 12. You can get to your weight limits mighty fast. Unless speed is your primary purpose, I'd go with a 20-25 tiller.

Re: outboard suggestions

Definitely lookin for a used ob, unless i can find a great deal on a new unsold leftover.

I've got a hp range I'm looking for, exactly which brand will depend on price & availability. Which brings me to my original question....

Re: outboard suggestions

Maybe find one from as low as 400-900. Just take a look around the net. Craigslist, ebay. Should be able to get a deal.

Check if that model corresponds to a Yam or Tohatsu manufacturer. If cable throttle it's a Yam, if it's rod/pinion throttle it's Tohatsu, just to have in mind for spare parts availability and friendly dealers. If it's a 2 strokes, new is around $ 3,500.00 or higher.

Re: outboard suggestions

Brief word about horsepower increases.

As Frank pointed out you cannot magically increase hp. However, what many manufactures do is retard hp on the same model frame by making changes to timing, carburetion, etc. So, by bringing a retarded hp engine back up to the maximum hp for that block you can gain real hp in many models by swapping carbs or a simple timing adjustment.

Re: outboard suggestions

Correct about the HP. There are several 9.9s out there that you can swap the carbs to a 15 hp and also manifold and you get your hp increase. That being said I would suggest not to mess with it. Get ya a 15 if ya want a 15 and a 9.9 if ya want a 9.9. And Brett that sounds like a decent deal. Just keep looking around you may be able to find one cheaper. But if its in great shape and runs good/ with good compression jump on it.

The picture in the ad shows the tiller folded up and it looks like there's a rod that runs on the underside of the tiller for it's entire length. I guess this is Tohatsu-made??

Googling the tohatsu site and clicking the dealer locator reveals 2 dealers in my area...one 22 miles and the other 24 miles away.

Re: outboard suggestions

Mariner is Mercury. Just a division of the Mercury.

Re: outboard suggestions

so what I am hearing (or not hearing) here is that manufacturer or year does not matter as long as it's in good shape?

Re: outboard suggestions

People have their preferences on manufacturers, just like with cars (Ford v. Chevy v. Toyota).

However, some manufacturers, as they went through economic problems, let quality drop below their reputation, for some years.

So except for a motor made by a company while it was on the ropes (Bombadier) the year is not that important, unlike cars. Motors of any age can be neglected, stored incorrectly, damaged by running without oil/cooling water, or sunk, and end up as problem motors. Or they can be stored correctly for years and extend the life, especially with small ones. Big ones need to be run; nothing worse than a 10 year old motor with 20 hours on it.

For a small motor, if it runs well, shows no signs of neglect, and has good compression, buy it regardless of age (well, within a few decades; antiques are different).

Re: outboard suggestions

that's good info, thanks. where is a good place to research pricing info? A lot of times I'll look at completed (sold) listings on ebay for clues but dunno if that's a good place for outboard prices...

Thats always a good way to research. I would say just look around for one you think is a good deal and go for it.

Re: outboard suggestions

Assuming the motor has had reasonable care its probably a good motor.
But I would be sure there is a mechanoc in the area that will work on it.
Check the availability of parts abd ease of decifering model numbers
and application.
For instance; Evinrude/Johnson motors routine parts are available from dozens of vendors including Iboats and BRP dealers. At I boats a 7 year old could read the listings and know what parts cover what motors.

Re: outboard suggestions

i plan on sticking with johnson/evinrude or mercury. possibly nissan or yamaha. there's a mercury dealer about half mile from where i live. i might be able to pick up an off-season bargain when the snow is laying thick on the ground. the salesmen will likely be very hungry then!!
