Re: outboard suggestions
People have their preferences on manufacturers, just like with cars (Ford v. Chevy v. Toyota).
However, some manufacturers, as they went through economic problems, let quality drop below their reputation, for some years.
So except for a motor made by a company while it was on the ropes (Bombadier) the year is not that important, unlike cars. Motors of any age can be neglected, stored incorrectly, damaged by running without oil/cooling water, or sunk, and end up as problem motors. Or they can be stored correctly for years and extend the life, especially with small ones. Big ones need to be run; nothing worse than a 10 year old motor with 20 hours on it.
For a small motor, if it runs well, shows no signs of neglect, and has good compression, buy it regardless of age (well, within a few decades; antiques are different).
