outboard tip advice

I am looking to buy a 15 hp OMC kicker for my boat.

I have a few leads...a few late 80's and a 2000

the 2000 is a little more ($675)

the others are around $400-$500

havent seen any eyt in person.

Is there an inherant issue with the 2000 models?

i have heard good things about the 80's 9.9 and 15's

but i havent heard anythign about the new units.

certain years had flaws and problem issues on some brands and hp models

just looking for any info along those lines for a 2000 15 HP johnson outboard.

because i am thinking for an Extra $100-$150 that the newer model is a more attractive deal

all else in terms of condition being equal

PS on one of the 80's 15 hp i have to take a 14 foot boat and trailer

That 2000 seems kinda cheap in my opinion. I tend to stay with the older models having a 1972 50 hp and an 1983 merc kicker. The only thing I can see is maybe some parts become obsolete.

The good think about the 80's 9.9/15 is that all the parts are virtually interchangeable from 74-92 minus the ignition, after that they started changing everything up. Powerhead was different for sure.

that is the kind of info I was looking for...in addition to a "problematic" motor

there are lots of 9.9-15 hp from those years......so parts would be a big plus fator for getting the older motor...


does an 87 evinrude 15 hp have points?

or not?

No, points went away in 77, the first 3 years they went with points and no tell tale, 77 up went powerpack. The only think i watch for on the early motor are the twist grip gears, make sure they are in good shape-expensive to replace if they are chewed up. In 86 they changed the tiller setup to a cable style control and did away with the slow idle knob, they were also an a issue as they broke as time went on.
