Yesterday, my 6hp Nissan 4-stroke outboard went underwater for about a minute. I don't know the year of the outboard, i would guess 2004. I pulled it out, drained the carburetor, took it off and flushed it with fresh gas. Then took off all the lines and emptied them. Then removed the spark plug and cranked the motor about 30 times until it was dry. Then sprayed everything with wd-40. I checked the oil and it looked fine. I ran it for about 5 minutes. Today in the morning i went to run it more and checked the oil and saw it was milky coffee colored. I drained the oil and put in fresh oil and ran it for about a minute. I checked again and it was coffee colored again. I repeated the process again and saw it was coffee colored again. It seems to have gotten a little better each time but im not 100% sure. I haven't replaced the oil filter because i don't know where it is. What should i do?

Here's pictures of the oil the first time I drained it.

Re: Outboard underwater, coffee colored oil. What to do?

Year is unimportant; model/serial is everything. You likely have an NSF6A or A2. There isn't any oil filter, so you can stop looking for one. You may have to change the oil a half dozen times or more, as the water collects in odd places, including the breather hose that runs up to the air intake. As long as the motor wasn't running when it went swimming, you probably have not bent a rod, nor blown a head gasket, nor cracked a block. Repeat your changing oil, running up to temp, then changing again a few times and you will probably be OK.

:) That's what I'd do... what he said. Change the oil till the problem clears up. It's OK.... a good use for the old oil is around the flower beds and veggie garden.... keeps the weeds from growing up

Regards,

Steve
