So I have an 86 mirrocraft lakefisher. It has an 86 (?) Mercury 50hp on it now. I have a chance to buy a 83(?) Merc 70hp for cheap money. From my quick and dirty searching the older 70 weighs less. I know the boat would handle it in just not sure if the weights are correct. Any reason I shouldn't do the swap?

. My questions are...What is the max HP rating for the boat...What do you hope to gain by switching out.

If you look in jb's sig there is a link to boat spec's. Following the links there is no Lake Fisher. There is a Lake Fisherman, the specs for that are.
1986 Mirrocraft by Northport 3616 16 Lake Fisherman

This Mirrocraft by Northport outboard utility has a aluminum hull, is 16.17 feet long and 74 inches wide at the widest point. The boat weighs approximately 308 pounds with an empty fuel tank and without any gear or passengers. The maximum horsepower we have listed for this outboard boat is 45 hp .

There's your answer. Pass on the 70 and replace the 50 with a smaller motor since you are currently over-powered.

If he has a classic 50 it should be a 45 hp. I would not trade your motor for that 70 the other guy gets the better end of that deal. You have a much better motor than that 70 hp is.
