Hey guys,

Ive been having a problem with starting my boat. When I try to start it in neutral it will try to start but wont fire up. But when I push the button(throttle only) in on the Quicksilver controller and move the arm forward and then start it. It will start everytime.

When I move it back down to neutral it has a hard time keeping it running. Usually will not stay running in neutral.

Ive cleaned my carburetors but that didnt seem to do anything. The boat runs fine in forward/reverse just wont start in neutral.

I have read that it may be the Neutral Safety Switch and that it is located in the control arm. What does the NSS look like and anyone know how to get at it? Ive gotten the entire Quicksilver unit mount off but dont know where the NSS is located or how to fix the NSS once I do find it? Or is it neutral idle? im not sure where thats located

This is the Quicksilver controller I have:(ps whats the switch on the right for?)

Thanks Mario

If the NSS was the problem, the starter wouldn't operate. Your problem is with the way the motor is running: carb issue (idle set too low, dirt in internal passages), overall motor condition (low compression), or some other problem.

You have discovered you can start the motor when you set it to fast idle. That is the proper method for a cold motor. Are you also engaging the choke? This is usually done by pushing in the key while the starter is engaged.

The neutral switch only breaks the circuit to the solelnoid in F and R so it wont start in gear and has nothing to do with the running ..NYbo is right ...check out all the simple things. Idle mix would be my first port of call 1 1/4 turns out .

okay... so Ive set the idle screw to the proper specs and even tried playing around with them...(moving them to a lower setting)
now the motor will not turn over at all no matter what I do
somewhat like a car with a dead alternator

any ideas? Ive tried to start it more then enough times...could I of made myself another problem after fixing the idle speed?

my boat is a mercury
it says gt - 75 on it
but can not find out what year it is
the serial number is 6616110

Thats what you said which to me means the starter wont run ....then you said you checked the spark .....how do you do that without it turning over ?
