Hello all! I'm new to this forum and new to boating. While I'm 40 years old, boating has managed to stay out of the hobby list till now. However, I have 6 year old and 3 year old boys and they love to go fishing.

I purchased a 14 foot row boat from a neighbor last year and cleaned it up. Found someone selling a 10hp Johnson Seahorse model QD-20 and picked it up too.

The motor has been well maintained. From what I've been able to learn from this website, it is a 1959 model, that takes a 2 cycle mix of 24:1.

However, while it is obvious that the motor has had a recent rebuild, it still is not running well. When I turn the throttle to SLOW or SHIFT to go from forward to reverse, it stalls. In fact, when we took it out last weekend, it barely ran at all. It was very rough and no power. Every once it a while, it would catch and run very smoothly will accpetable power, but after 10 or 15 seconds of this nirvana, it would quickly go back to running very poorly.

I've worked on older car motors in the past, so I do have a little bit of mechanical ability. However, I'm lost when it comes to this outboard.

I pulled the plugs and cleaned them, but no help. I have a couple of quesitons:

1. - What resource material would you recommend I borrow from library or purchase in order to better understand and maintain this motor?

2. - How do you set the air mixture settings? There are 2 on the front of the motor. A white, outer ring that goes from 1 to 6 and is labeled Lean on one side and Rich on the other. I have to keep this all the way on Lean to get it to run at all. The second adjustment is a needle pointer that can make multiple 360 turns. This is labeled SLOW and I assume is for when the motor is just idling as opposed to turning the throttle up. I have not been able to figure how to set this one at all.

Before I take it to a shop and hand over the bucks to get it tuned up, I'm hoping to get some suggestions from you experts. Thanks in advance.

Look in the FAQ's under Carburetor Adjustments - Two Adjustable N/Vs

Just went through this myself. It took alittle fiddling running it in a bucket of water in the backtard to get it running good, then a bit more once I went out on the water as it behaved a bit different than in the bucket, but its really pretty simple.

There are plenty of generic service manuals. They sell them here at iboats, or try your local library.

Your motor is running on one cylinder. Once in awhile, the second one kicks in and that is the boost of power you are getting. Chances are about 99% that you have bad coils. They are all bad from that vintage unless they have already been replaced. They have those here at iboats too.

No point in trying to dink with the carburetor till you get the ignition fixed. As far as the adjustments go, the lower one (on the carb itself) is the high speed adj. Begin with it 3/4 turn open. The upper one is the slow speed adj. Begin with it 1 1/2 turns open. With motor on the boat in the water, run at full speed and turn the high speed to the right till it starts to falter, then turn it back till it regains power. Turning it too far left will make it "4 cycle" (run rough). Too far right will make it run lean and that can cause engine damage. Then slow the motor down to idle and do the same with the slow speed adj. The knobs just pop off if you need to turn beyond what they will allow. Once adjusted, put the knobs back on at mid-scale and forget them.

No doubt an original ser. manual is best.Reprints should be available at Ken Cook co_Once you have your ignition fixed up you can adjust your high and low speed knobs. As I recall these are held on with a screw and the shaft
sort of spreads as the screw tightens to hold the knob if it is loose the knob may just spin.Once it is adj. right this allows the knob to be set at the mid point.

Good advice so far. After you do the basic high and low-speed needle settings you'll have to take it out on the boat and fine tune a little, run it up to speed and re-find the sweet spot then slow down and set the slow-speed jet. You'll get it purring, then run a can of sea foam through the next tank of gas.

Thanks for the help so far. I'll look in the FAQ and try and find the replacement coils somewhere here on iBoats. I'm guessing I look under Marine Store.

FR has nailed it...been through a lot of give-away ---runs like crap...old Johnnys...do new coils...polish the points (I aint telling ya twice.:rolleyes:;)..)....one smooth motor (after a good carb clean...good old motors are still many years old..!

I'm having difficulty finding the coils. Can I ask for some help on this one? How about a link to what I need? Thanks again.

Part number 18-5181. Go to the marine store. Type the number in the search box. Scroll down till you come to it.

The coils should be easy to find. Do you have a local OMC dealer nearby?

My local NAPA store also carries parts for outboards. It sometimes best to have the part with you to make sure the photos in the NAPA catalogs are correct.

I don't know what an OMC dealer is, but I live in the metropolitan Phoenix area so there is likely someone that has them. I do live close to a NAPA.

the motor is located at our cabin about 2 hours from Phoenix. I found a book at the library on outboards and hope to be able to pull the coils this weekend then get the replacements.

Thanks for the help.

Re: Outboards for Dummies - QD-20

I've got the new coils and the Johnson Outboard service manual on order. I reaalized today that I should probably get new spark plugs too. I have been searching the Marine store and can't find the plugs - just the wires.

I'm thinking if I know the spark plug type, I can get it at NAPA, Checker or Autozone. Just need to know the model and gap.

Now, I'm sure someone can just tell me what I need, but then I wouldn't learn nothing. Can you tell me where on this site I need to go to find it? Thanks

I couldn't find the dag-nab chart either. Easy answer is to call the 800 number. Or, I could just say it takes J6C plugs. But then you wouldn't learn anything.

Well, I guess I learned something - when needing spark plugs, contact F_R.

Thanks. Do you know the gap?

Couldn't find the Champion brand without having to special order. I found a cross-reference chart that listed the Autolite 303. Picked up 2 of those at Checker.

Re: Outboards for Dummies - QD-20

Just a follow up. I installed the new coils and plugs this past weekend. You people are experts! The coils (both) were definitely blown.
I haven't had the chance to start the motor up yet, but I'm sure its going to run better now that I have good coils and plugs in it.
Thanks again.

You're halfway done. You got the boat running, now you just need to find the fish ;)
