Im the proud of a 1984 Baja 184BR with a 150xp Evinrude. Now granted my Evinrude is in need of major work. and I have gotten a smaller replacement hanging on my boat at the moment. My wife and I have been shopping a little bit for a new boat. Well she sees all the new boats, while i'm looking at new outbourds. She says we get a whole new boat for 18,000.00-24,000.00. And I say a new outbourd for 14,000.00. what do you think?

Why not look ay used boats. Look at what's available in the iboats classifieds. With your budget, you can get a really beautiful boat which will surpass both your wife's and your expectations. Good luck, whichever way you decide to go. Keep us posted.

If ya got busloads of money.. Why did ya buy a old used boat with a non running outboard?

What's wrong with the 150? Power-head?

Well first thing the boat was a gift. from my grandfather. no one can beat free. and the second, is the power head need a complete rebuild. I ran the boat right to the edge ever time it was on the water as a kid. I grow up in a boat racers home. and it was GREAT. those times were a blast, but Long gone.

You can buy a complete reman powerhead for those engines for around 3k.. If the boat is still in good shape, ya want to keep her and you can turn a wrench.. That's the route I would go.. Maybe find ya a complete good used outboard.. They sell pretty cheap.(Saw a 150 merc on CL this evening for 2k). I wouldn't buy a new outboard for anything but a new boat... If you was to spend that kind of cash.. Why not buy a new rig? I priced the new stuff too.. 18k will put ya in a very nice bowrider with all the whistles and a 4.3l.. That's plenty of speed and power.. Well also get way better on fuel than the ol 2 stroke...

The beauty of the outbord is you can replace it with most anything of your choice much easier than an I/O. I'd look around for a used motor - should be much, much less than the $14K you mentioned. Then again, if you aren't happy with the boat, it won't matter what motor you put on, it's the same boat.

For me, I'd find a motor, slap it on, fix up the boat, and head out to recapture your youth!

Hey i see you are in st. Louis, just up the road from me. I live in Rolla, going to school for Mechanical Engineering at Missouri S&T, (from KC). Anyways, around here i love my old outboard. It really just extends the boating season for me. I am normally one of the first people out because so many people around here have inboards, and you dont want to de-winterize until you KNOW that it will not freeze again, same with fall, you winterize BEFORE the first freeze. With outboards, just dump the water out when you are done and she is just fine the next time you take her out, freeze or not.

Yea your about an hour to an hour and a half away. Sense picking up my boyhood boat. Were it sat in Florida far 6 years. She was rough gel coat was peeling, sits were rotten, the floor was in good shape. That surprised me. the steering was locked up.

Well, to date the steering is free. All the seats have been rebuilt. All the wiring has been reran. I have hang a smaller motor, till my 150 is fixed. Put a new axle under the trailer, sandblast the trailer and primed. waiting to have the money to paint trailer and re gel coat the boat.

She is a work in progress. But this is the boat I grow to love. My grandfather showwed me how to take her right to the edge. And I do love the feeling when everthing come together and you feel the boat break free of the water and your flying! She never topped 85mph. But that was enough for a ski boat. Grandpa sure knew how to set up a boat. And i'm truly thankful to have such a great grandfather and boat.

well the boat is up at home, so my normal spot is Smithville Lake http://www.nwk.usace.army.mil/sm/Marina.cfm , however i do make it down to Table Rock once or twice a year (By far my favorite lake and 10 times the lake that LOTO is.. so much quieter than lake of the ozarks. Plus i am scared to put my 16' Checkmate on LOTO!! With the low freeboard i would never enjoy the ride because i would always be looking for huge wakes that would swamp me.

Nice, you can't buy nostalgia or history with a boat your grandfather owned.

Thank you. Nostalgia is the correct term to use. My grandfather is a heck of a great guy. Anyone that knows him is a better preson for it.

nope..smithville is man made. Man made in missouri= muddy. Don't get me wrong, it is a clean lake- but is not by any means clear. It is also great on week days, i try not to go out on weekends with my little 'mate, especially sundays. It gets very busy. Come to think of it, i dont believe Missouri has any natural lakes at all.
