This is not a "witch hunt". I am currently in discussions with my dealer over my 2008 pontoon trailer tires that are severely weather checked and in one case has a 1/2 inch long split in the sidewall. The date code on them is 2004 so these tires were four years old when I took delivery of the trailer. The spare I bought after the purchase is a different manufacturer and is current production. These tires carry 90 PSI and I would bet they would not last through the next season. My advice when purchasing tires is to demand to view the date code before installation. Insist that they install only current production coded tires. You pay the same regardless so why not demand the newest.

Very interesting, never gave it a second thought before. I always thought that if the tires wernt stored where UV light could get to then that they would be concidered New Tires... makes ya want to go crawl under your junk and check it out..And will check the next purchase for the date thanks for re-posting this. we always want the safest for our families..

I updated my trailer last season from single to tandem axle. After my second flat I went to my mechanic with it. He said he was in shock. EVERY one of the valve stems were rotted, which I immediately had changed. He went over the tires and said they looked solid, but I'm curious how I rot out four valve stems and then trust the tires. FYI: My trailer sits indoors all summer/winter and the boat is on a lift so it's not in and out of the water a lot nor does it bake in the sun all that much.

Best to keep an eye on those things. I've blown a tire on a single axle and spun a bearing. Both are very unnerving at highway speeds....

Ihave an update on my situation with four year old tires on a less than year old trailer. Dealer called today and said I will have two new tires by the end of the week. I assume they are coming from Shorelander (the trailer manufacturer) but the brand name on the tires is anyones guess. The two that were falling apart came from China (as though you couldn't guess).

This is something that is widely known in the motorcycle community. As older tires harden and thus have reduced traction. I've always checked date codes on tires. Also those that don't drive much, lots of tread doesn't mean your 3 year old tires are any good. A good rainfall will have you slipping and sliding all over the place if you get careless.
