Outdrive Gear oil Gray and thick!

Hello,

I just bought this boat. I took it out a couple of times and it was running hot. At least that was what the gauge said.

This is a Pre-Alpha Drive S/N 2461435. The outdrive is hooked to a GM inline 6 cyl. 160HP which is sitting in a 1966 John Allmand cabin cruiser.

I found an impeller kit for the drive and began to change it out. When I went to drain the gear oil, water came out first, then sludgy grey colored gear oil.

I know the grey can mean metal, but can it also be just caused by the water and oil mixing? I proceeded to change the impeller, when I removed the top and pulled the housing apart I noticed that it was missing gaskets. It had one gasket but the kit shows it to have 3 gaskets, one being a metal plate. So I was hoping the water was a result of the missing gaskets on the housing.

The housing and shaft looked great, very clean. No grooves or burnt rubber. I put it back together and added quart of gear oil in it and took it out (which may not have been enough since it did not come out of the top vent hole). This is when the engine would not get to the right RPMS under a load. While I was out on the water, my temp gauge stopped working so I could not tell if it was hot. But you could cook a steak on the exhaust manifold. Very hot to the touch.

Also, when I turn, the drive growls, from reading Don's sticky I think I have a gimble bearing going out?

Could these problems (lack of RPM, hot engine, gray/watery gear oil, and growling) all be directly related in some way. Or are these most likely all separate issues? Maybe the outdrive is not functioning properly causing the motor to over work and get hot? How do I check the outdrive gears? How do I check the gimble bearing? I searched for info by using the outdrive S/N I referenced above with no luck?..does anyone know where I can find info on that serial number (pre-alpha drive -- S/N 2461435)
Any help is appreciated....

I don't understand.... you put ONE QT of gear oil in the drive??? Not knowing how many QTs your drive needs... and then took it out for a run?? That top hole is your dipstick... WTF dude???

there is whole bunch of stuff you need to check!! But folks that could help you ( way better than me) are going to rip for the above... and not take you seriously. not trying to bust on you... just FYI

Nope,... You've got Alotta seperate issues goin' on....

My guess is, you need Mercruiser manual #1 for that unit...

Take it easy man....don't get your panties in a twist! I admit I am new to the world of boating. I followed the direction of an employee of West Marine who told me that is how much my drive should hold....I figured he new as much. But I found later that you are supposed to put oil in until it comes out of the top....geez

Hehe...
You gonna learn a lot of lessons real quick!!!
There is a reason that guy is working at WM and not in a shop!! :D
Bond-O put you on the right track... put the wrench down and get the manuals.
its cool to jump in and try to fix stuff... the thing that got me was that you got the impeller kit and seemed like got it in ok... this means that you SHOULD have known not to listen to the guy in the isle with the blue shirt!! And verify the OIL amout or the process of filling the outdrive!!
Sorry we got off on the wrong foot. But like i said your best bet is to educate yourself as much as possible about your set up before wrenching!!
Hope you get it fixed up and enjoy the boat!!

:eek::eek:- that's like draining the oil in the car and taking it for a blast around the block before you refill it. There's gears in the top of the drive that were dry while you went for a spin. Def. get the manual. That WM employee could have cost you a drive.

Thanks for the replies.....I shall not take WM's work for anything. Eric, I hope I didn't burn the drive....I just drove if it for about 3-4 minute intervals for a very short period of time...

IOP - no worries, thanks for the link. I will be purchasing one of these..I will need it.

No, it won't.

Avoid the Seloc "manual" specifically. Buy the one from Mercruiser; Sometimes you can get a used copy on ebay.

Re: Outdrive Gear oil Gray and thick!

Do you think this book will have what I need?

Ayuh,.... Only if you're workin' in a gravel lot,+ need a knee pad....

Take the time to find the Mercruiser Factory manuals...
This is about All that's left for On-Line manuals... Unfortunately, #1 isn't included...
Atleast it'll give you an Idea of the quality...

Make sure you don't get it all covered in grease before returning it ;)
