Hello,
I just bought this boat. I took it out a couple of times and it was running hot. At least that was what the gauge said.
This is a Pre-Alpha Drive S/N 2461435. The outdrive is hooked to a GM inline 6 cyl. 160HP which is sitting in a 1966 John Allmand cabin cruiser.
I found an impeller kit for the drive and began to change it out. When I went to drain the gear oil, water came out first, then sludgy grey colored gear oil.
I know the grey can mean metal, but can it also be just caused by the water and oil mixing? I proceeded to change the impeller, when I removed the top and pulled the housing apart I noticed that it was missing gaskets. It had one gasket but the kit shows it to have 3 gaskets, one being a metal plate. So I was hoping the water was a result of the missing gaskets on the housing.
The housing and shaft looked great, very clean. No grooves or burnt rubber. I put it back together and added quart of gear oil in it and took it out (which may not have been enough since it did not come out of the top vent hole). This is when the engine would not get to the right RPMS under a load. While I was out on the water, my temp gauge stopped working so I could not tell if it was hot. But you could cook a steak on the exhaust manifold. Very hot to the touch.
Also, when I turn, the drive growls, from reading Don's sticky I think I have a gimble bearing going out?
Could these problems (lack of RPM, hot engine, gray/watery gear oil, and growling) all be directly related in some way. Or are these most likely all separate issues? Maybe the outdrive is not functioning properly causing the motor to over work and get hot? How do I check the outdrive gears? How do I check the gimble bearing? I searched for info by using the outdrive S/N I referenced above with no luck?..does anyone know where I can find info on that serial number (pre-alpha drive -- S/N 2461435)
Any help is appreciated....
