how hard is it to regear an outdrive?

current specs on the two I have are 1.98:1 while the 350 engine usually comes with either a 1.41:1 or 1.50:1.

they are MC-1 outdrives.

been looking around and trying to find this type of info but getting mixed info.

I see the individual gear sets on ebay new for like $150 for these drives and it "seems" it would be no different than swapping gears in a car rearend i.e. (setting up the lash/wear pattern properly, etc).

but no clue if they come with different splines in the different units, etc so that I'd have to swap out shafts, etc.

looking at them it looks like the ratio is in the upper portion of the outdrive with just a drive gear and driven gear as a set.

Without the special tools for setting gear height, along with the OEM service manual, you can't change gears and get them set properly.

Re: outdrive gear swap?

I have the service manual for these outdrives and see the special tools needed. my good friend who works for a local marina owes me after I swapped out the transmission in his car last month. he's just still on pain meds for the next few weeks (had his arm ripped out of the socket...dont ask lol) and is really hard to talk to right now as he's not in his right mind.

he's got all the tools like the bearing race puller, etc.

I guess I was just mainly interested if the shafts in the outdrive are common across the board or if I'd have to basically swap out all the guts along with the gears because at that point, it would just make sense to sell the two 1.98 drives I have and buy the correct 1.50 drive.

No, you can't just swap internal parts of the drive. They have many small changes from year to year.

but the ratio can be changed with the right drive/driven gear combo? or no go there as well. you didnt come right out and say that in your original response, just that all the tools are needed for the job.

Re: outdrive gear swap?

do either of you happen to have that outdrive cross reference webpage bookmarked? I found it in a thread on here a couple weeks ago but forgot to bookmark it and now I cant find it again. It was a page that went into pretty much all the mercruiser outdrives, the applications they were for, and the ratios-years, etc.

god I'm horrible at describing things sometimes.
