outdrive gears spun causes ??

83 alpha 1 120hp was out and heard like a miss in motor and it bogged for a split sec. and sounded like went to neutral. got towed in and got it home took the top of outdrive off and gears eat off, no water in oil and the oil looked good except the metal in it, was nice n shiny in the sun light :grumpy: but as far as I know hit nothing no noise to this happening and looked like new when checked and new oil change this year, had about 5hrs on it after change 2 outtings. but what uslley causes this or think something in lower unit locked up maybe ? but by hand it will go into F-N-R but can not turn prop in gear and spins free in neutral. any ideas??

post some pics. usually a low oil condition takes out the gears making them smooth.

. If there just missing broken teeth, then suspect a hard hit with the prop to fracture them.

the gear with the yoke and out put shaft looks like that, but the other is 3/4 eat up with about 5 teeth don't look bad, try to get some pic.s was full of oil, was using shell spirax gear oil hd sae 80w-90

Had a neighbor's upper drive take out the gear set. Found out that he had drained the lower unit, then refilled from the top (instead of filling bottom up). Formed an air pocket, didn't get it full.
