Lost the upper gear set this weekend. The serial # on the outdrive is almost unreadable and I do not have enough pics to identify. Maybe the partial numbers will help

Ser # 1.47R 8L484551

The Bold #'s are difficult to read and I cannot tell if there are any afterwards.

SEI Advice

My upper gear set failed. Most likely an Alpha 1 Gen 2. I have another thread going with help to identify it.

I am looking for advice to replace the whole outdrive to an SEI for an estimated $1700 complete install. Please give input.

Thanks.

Re: Outdrive help!!

The boats a 1978, but nothing is original, so its hard to go by the year. The engine was replaced in 2009 and the OD sometime before then.

Can you take a couple of pictures of the drive, and get one of the tag with the info for the drive and post them, maybe a 2nd set of eyes can get it.

These are what I took yesterday. Unfortunately I have none of the full OD.

Ayuh,.... Are there visible bolts holdin' the lower to the upper,..?? then it's a Gen.II....

If so, ya want a Gen.II, with the 1.47:1 ratio....

Btw, the 1st digit of yer serial # is zer0,... not 8... OLxxxxx

Re: SEI Advice

I am looking for other pics. Boat is a ways away so I can't just check it easily. My notes state its a Gen II.

Is this worth fixing or replacing the whole OD? Gear set kits with shim seem to average around $350, but I have no idea about labor and don't have time to tackle on my own.

Re: Outdrive help!!

Did you run yours dry?

Not a expert but I'll tell you my recent experience. Blew out my upper drive also. Rebuild kits were almost as expensive as just replacing the unit with the SEI. Everybody says if the upper goes you have to replace the lower also because of the shavings that contaminate all the fluid and go everywhere. I ordered my whole Gen 1 Alpha 2 from SEI Wednesday and received it in Alaska Friday morning. They do no come together for shipping but the install was fairly easy and went well. Had the boat out all weekend and seems to be working good.

Good Luck!
