outdrive holes first or after?

Am about to replace transom.

Is it easier/better to cut the hole for the outdrive (mercruiser) in each layer then laminate? laminate first and then cut? or install solid and cut after installed in the boat?

Is one method stronger? I can't see it but am not an engineer.;)

I can see benefits to all 3.....

Suggestions from those who know are greatly appreciated.

Re: outdrive holes first or after?

Thanks tashasdaddy !

This brings up another question...I was expecting to use the hole to pass clamps through to hold things. Ideas on how to hold the "whole thing together" while the PL sets up and dries. The only "holes" through the transom are the towing eyes and 8 small screw holes from where the ladder mounted. I am working with no deck, bare stringers and nothing else inside the hull at this point. Ideas? Pics? Thanks

Re: outdrive holes first or after?

you may have to take some 2x4 and long bolts, and use the holes you have. you can drill a hole in the center of the outdrive. and use it. you can block off these braces. don't forget the transom drain.

Doh!!!

I read the reply and responded without thinking!! I am normally very good at engineering a solution but sure missed it here.

All very good pionts and good solutions. Had forgotten about the drain hole....:( Hoo boy...wasn't thinking.

Thanks again.
