Outdrive hydraulics

I noticed a slight leak in the left hydraulic cylinder that raises and lowers my outdrive. This is on a Volvo Penta 5.0 I/O. So I lowered the outdrive and in doing so quite a bit more fluid came out during the process. I removed the cylinder and there's a top plate with 4 shallow holes where the shaft goes in that needs to come off. There must be a special tool for this. Once I get the top plate off I'm hopping I can replace the "O" ring that has gone bad causing the leak. Now I just need to figure out how to bleed the system???

Re: Outdrive hydraulics

hello<br /> its called a service manual first. in the manual is the part # for the nessasary tool. snap-on also makes a universal pin spanner that will work. I am assuming you are dealing with an SX style drive and not a swedish built one. good luck and keep posting

Re: Outdrive hydraulics

I have the same issue with my trim cyliders. (Volvo Penta SX Drive) I made a tool by pressing dowels into a piece of flat aluminum stock I cut a "C" into. I works to remove the trim caps but I have a bunch of weekends boating planned so I have not attemped the rebiuld yet. VP does not sell the trim seal kits anymore because they suck and want to sell you the entire trim cylionder. I am going to try to match the seals up thru a bearing and seal person and I will post my results good or bad. Mike
