Outdrive ID for parts

I have been checking around on parts prices for my Alpha One drive but have run into some information that has me wandering what I actually have. First off, I have an outdrive complete upper and lower off my 1987 Wellcraft Cuddy Cabin. I have found the following numbers on the upper unit:

1.98 R
0B560559

No numbers on lower.

I also have a second lower unit but no numbers there either.

Both drives are Alpha One drives Generation One to the best of my knowledge. Both have squared off cavitation plate. Both look to be identical except for the skeg is worn a little more on one than the other, or the second lower unit has a new skeg. Here is my problem, some sites offer parts for R/MR/Alpha One and others only for R/MR. I know there is a difference in gears between the R/MR due to part numbers and prices. I have disassembled the second lower unit and it has a nut and washer for the pinion gear which shows to be an MR, if true then I am missing the preload pin on the shaft. I have not yet disassembled the other drive for inspection yet.

I see no letters stamped on the propshaft, unless this is on the end of thepropshaft that is inside the case. Are both drives compatible with my upper? Which one is the better lower unit if they are different?

Lastly, are the R/MR drives simply Alpha one models or are there actually three different types consisting of R, MR, and Alpha One Gen One?

Ayuh,... The 3 are slightly different, internally, but are completely interchangable...

You can easily remove an R drive from your boat and install an MR or Alpha I, you can also exchange upper and lower units on the 3.
However, you can't always interchange all internal parts of the 3 as there are minor differences.

Well,... You were lookin' in the parts lookups, 'n decided which is which, so which 1 do you Think you have...

The 1s with the preload pin are Pre-alpha, 'n the Alphas don't have it...

OK what I have is a complete outdrive from my 1987 Wellcraft Cuddy Cabin and the lower unit from an outdrive off a 1985 Chaparral 198 XL. The lower unit from the Chap is the one I have so far disassembled. I do have the factory manual but evidently not the good one as it seems to be lacking some minor info on certain things. From what I can tell, the Chap lower unit may not have had a preload pin and I am pretty sure the outdrive from the Wellcraft has no preload pin. I am guessing this is a group of drives considered Generation one and I am also guessing that what I have is the MR lower units. Best I can tell it looks as though the only way to find out for sure is order a gear set which is does not need so for now I will just go with MR until I find otherwise.

You noticed that too? Yea, if I ever need a gear set I either have to determine for sure which drive I have or decide between $437 or $550 for a gear set, which wouldnt make much difference cause I would go to SEI then. No they are not cheap but if I did order a set then that is still a big difference by not knowing for sure which drive I have.

My ultimate goal: To determine if I have R or MR drive. Also, to determine if R MR and Alpha one are three drives or if R and MR are Alpha one drives which I am already pretty sure of. Im just not clear where Gen One comes in at.

I already knew both my lowers were interchangeable but when I order parts of any kind I would like to be sure of what I have rather than order parts just to send them back and order more.
