I have what I think is a MC#1 upper unit married to an Alpha 1 Lower unit. The upper has the loop on the top #5209992. The Lower Unit has a number inside the casing in a cavity next to the shift rod #1623-8950-0 (last digit tough to read.. could be 6 or G).

The anti cavitation plates are almost squared off on the back.

Do these numbers id these units to 1 upper and alpha lower?

If this is the case, should there be a pre-load pin on the top of the drive shaft?

I appreciate any help

Ayuh,... If it's an Alpha 1 lower unit, No, No preload pin...
I think those went away with the "R" drives, or maybe it was the "MR" drives...

Re: Outdrive Identification

thanks Bond-o. I thought the pre-load pin had something to do with pushing down on the gears in the older units....wanted to be sure.

also, there is a groove for an O ring on the top of the driveshaft on this outdrive, Should there be an O ring on there?

Ayuh,... The preload pin, loads the shaft it's on,...
No pin, the shaft don't need it...

as fer the O-ring,...
If the groove is there, sure throw 1 on it...
It's been deleted in later drives...
I guess it weren't so necessary for Whatever it does,...
