Ok guys I got the u-joints trough the bellow but now I am still having problems getting it the rest of the way on you guys talk about alighnment? What does this mean alighnment of the gimbal berring? The lower unit holes are touching the bolts and I have the top cover off the lower unit and can see the horizontal shaft and I put a wrench on the milled out spots on the shaft but it seems to be locked into place I cannot rotate the shaft at all so I assume the splinned shaft is started. The lower unit mounting plate is about a inch away from the gimbal hosing but it wont go on the rest of the way I have been shaking it trying to get it on but it doesnt want to slide on I did however put marine greese on the slinned shaft wonder if I should have done this is the greese making the resistance? I would really hate to have to pull this thing back off considering how hard it was to get it on in the first place due to the bellows being so tight and I mean tight! anyone have any ideas to getting this thing the rest of the way on? It is only a inch or so from mounting it but it doesnt seem to want to go the rest of the way on been trying to shake it on and no go? :(

The splined shaft is supposed to be greased so you didn't do anything wrong there.
The alignment talked about is the engine to outdrive alignment. As far as I know, it can only be checked with a special tool. If you did not disturb the motor mounts or have the housing removed from the boat, you should not have changed the alignment. The alignment can change due to several things, but isn't usually a problem. If you just removed the 6 nuts from the 6 mounting bolts, you probably didn't cause a problem with alignment.
Are you sure you have all the shift mechanism properly aligned? There is a pin in the housing that needs to fit into a "V" in the outdrive. You may have bumped it out of position while working on things.
Other than that, I can only tell you that it is sometimes a 5 minute job and sometimes a 1 to 2 hour job. When mine finally does slide in during one of the contrary times, I have no idea what I did. It just goes in.

Charles

Take a look at what Charles suggests, on the linkage alignment. On my mercruiser alpha, the shifter must be in forward and the linkage of the lower unit must be facing straight ahead so they'll slide into one another. If one or the other are turned you won't get that last inch. Cheer up....After you've done this a few times, learned what needs to be aligned and when to wiggle and when to push etc. it should always be a quick and easy job. Dave

Yeah the shifting linkages are fine they arnt touching one another yet I pulled it the rest of the way off and inspected again and went to put it back on and same problem stuck in the same posistion cant seem to get it all the way on but nothing is in the way seems like the splined shaft dosnt want to go all the way in I wiped some of the excess greese off the shaft thinking it may be causing a slight problem now I dont know what to think. I have had it almost on know twice but it just wont go ARRRRRRR

hello
I think I forgot to tell you that the gimbal bearing can pivot in the housing. sometimes on removing the drive it gets knocked about. need to get the tool to check alighnment. napa stores sell them. the same tool also works for volvo sx and american volvo drives, omc cobra and mercruiser drives.
good luck
