Outdrive makes horrible noise

Well, now I have a problem that I need your help with. The whole thing starts with me neglecting to check the fuel/water seperator and the engine conking out at speed. Not WOT but on plane. After getting towed in and getting home finally. I check and replace the filter (funny how these things dont run on water). I hooked up the muffs and get her running. Now the outdrive makes an ungodly noise whether in gear or neutral. I'm not sure if there is a change with rpm's, I was kinda horrified by the sound and didn't dink around with it much. It sounds like a bearing race just turning away, a grinding high pitch sound. It is keeping cool, the water discharges as the thermostat opens, pee hole is peeing, etc. I have not checked the gear lube yet, thats gotta wait until Thursday when I get time to do it. Is this some kind of weird coincidence, or have I mucked something up? Any advice?

Thanks!

Only outboards have "Pee holes" if you have an outboard, you're in the wrong forum. Since you didn't post what you have, who knows what forum you should be on, ............. or how to answer your question if you are on the right forum.

Oooops, yeah that would help wouldn't it. Sorry. It is a 1978 Wellcraft V20, Mercruiser 898 with an Alpha 1 (MR) upgraded outdrive. It was running on the muffs, and there is a pee hole on the starboard side of the gear case towards the bottom where the prop shaft begins. Perhaps pee hole is the wrong name for it, but is sure looks like its peeing. Any ideas?

There might be abunch of spillage from the Muffs,........
And,....
There Should be water bubbling out thru the 2, 1 inch holes in the sides of the transom shield,.....
And thru the Prop..........

But,...... If your Outdrive is Peeing,........ That's a Problem all by itself.......

My Guess is,........You'll find Plenty of Metal when you drop the outdrive Oil..........

Good Luck........

Hey, I was just reading through the many threads, and came across this one. I have 87 bayliner, with an OMC outdrive, it has a pee whole, or at least it pees when using the muffs, I have checked the oil and there is nothing it in, it is clean. It has done this ever since I bought the boat 3 years ago. Is this not normal? I used to own a small fishing boat with and o/b, I know it would "pee" when using the muffs.

Frayedknot, I would guess that the real reason for you to konk out was a problem with the drive and not water in the fuel.. something got hot and locked up... stalling the engine.. In any case I think the small holes you spoke of are simply drain holes for the water passages in the drive.. I think you need to drain the drive fluid and check for metal.. if the fluid is clean, then pull the drive and check the gimbal bearing. if neither of these tests show up anything, then Its time to open the drive....Hang in there, and good luck

Well,......... I Don't Do OMCs,....
So I don't know whether Your outdrive has a Pee Hole or Not..............

But,...... This thread is about a Mercruiser, Alpha 1...............

I Know it Isn't supposed to have water, under pressure, Peeing from Anywhere on the Outdrive.........

There's a World of Difference between a Mercruiser,+ a OMC.......
Good, Bad,... Or Otherwise.........

Pardon my ignorance as I am a rookie boater but The little knowledge that I have on the Alpha one tell me there is a pee hole (cavity drain hole??).
My alpha one takes a pee from there every time!
Water is good OIL is not.

Yep Gabe, that's the hole. And it pees when on the muffs. I'll get to the oil later this week, school, work and a youngin suck up most of my time. I'll keep ya'll updated.

Flashback, I've got my fingers crossed for sure. I really think the water in the gas is my original problem, but I'm not about to rule anything out at this point without further investigative work. It could be exactly what you said about the binding and killing the engine, and it's just a coincidence with the water in the gas. I hate multiple failures.
