outdrive noise

1978 L6 165 hp 165 merc outdrive, when outdrive has been trimed up all the way is it alright to start motor with muffs and engage in forward or reverse without lowering the outdrive, because when i do this i here a soft whine in the outdrive, but when i trim the outdrive down a little bit the noise stops, is this something i should be concerned with.thanks george

no you shouldn't run it with the drive all the way up.

That knock is the U joints knocking together {binding}. This is not good for them.
