Hi CDJ31 .You need to pump from the bottom up to make sure there are no air pockets left in the gear housing.Pump in from drian plug till you see oil come out of the vent, plug the vent and if you have a resevoir keep pumping unto the oil reaches it and then plug the drain.Depending on your drive you will find the quantity of oil you need here. www.marinemechanic.com/site/page107.html

My alpha 1 has the resevoir. Once the gear oil comes out of the vent, do I need to plug the vent hole so that the resevoir will fill, or will it fill the resevoir before the oil comes out of the vent hole?

Yes, pump until you get oil in the bottom of the res. Then you can fill the res from the top of the res.

Summit1 if you have a resovoir you must fill them seperately.Fill the o/d from the bottom until fluid comes out of the vent. You should have the resovoir filled already with the line hanging straight down dripping to get out all the air from the line. With the line dripping and the fluid coming out of the top vent just connect the line in the venthole at that time.Charlie

Re: outdrive oil change

Are you talking about a grease gun? If so, I thought outdrive oil was 80W90. If you're using grease on a mercruiser outdrive, what kind of grease are you using? I checked at walmart and they don't offer a pump for liquid oils such as 80W90. Help please! I have a brand new out drive waiting for some lube.

Re: outdrive oil change

We are talking about a gear oil pump, not a grease gun. Some Wal-marts aren't going to have them, just depends where you are. Check Academy if you have one around there, Napa Auto Parts (they carry marine parts too), West Marine (http://www.westmarine.com), or look up a marine shop in your phone book.

The pump you are going to be looking for will skrew on top of a gear lube bottle (similar to the way a pump goes onto a soap bottle) and is going to have a clear tube with a fitting that will skrew into your drain/fill plug at the bottom of your lower unit. If you call a place that has them, and tell them you want a lower unit gear oil pump...they should know what you are looking for.

Hope this helps.

Re: outdrive oil change

hello
if your alpha 1 genII came from the factory with quicksilver high performance lube and I suspect it did, it tends to form mud at the bottom of the resevoir. clean it
other wise fill from the bottom till it runs out the vent. replace the vent plug with new gasket then remove the filler nozzle and replace the drain with a new gasket. clean, reinstall and fill the resevoir. I reccomend sticking with the hi performance gear lube from merc.
good luck and keep posting
