On older merc outdrives is there an oil line running into the motor area from the outdrive ?

Only if the drive is equipped with a gear lube reservoir tank.

Time to remove the drive and see if the bellows have gear lube from a bad seal in the upper.

Define 'older'... (20 years old is still the current model)

Let's have engine model, year and serial number and drive serial number....

In that age range, unless a reservoir was added (unlikely and unnecessary) the only oil lines that go through the hull are for power trim. The only way for gear lube to enter the hull is through the bellow and you have a blown outdrive seal, otherwise you have leaky trim lines, which will happen after 40 years
