outdrive oil

I need to add oil to the reserve but the Quicksilver oil says to not mix Quicksilver outdrive oil with any other outdrive oil. So, every time I add oil I have to start over by draining it all out? Am I missing something here?

If you have Quicksilver oil in the resevoir you should be able to add Quicksilver oil to it.<br />I believe it should be the high perfomance oil.

The only problem is, I have no idea what type or brand is in the outdrive.

then you must start from scratch if you are going to follow the manufacturers specs....I just did mine the same way.

You should be draining,and replacing the gear oil every 50 hours or so or at the end of the season as routine maintenence....20 bucks or so....What I would be concerned about is the fact that you need to add oil at all. The lower unit doesn't burn oil, and it has to go somewhere. Yours is probably leaking past the yoke seal into the bellows area...How much and how often do you need to add oil?....JK

Not much, when I bought the boat 5 months ago, it was a little low. I had it checked out and they gave ita clean bill of health. For whatever that is worth. Is it difficult to change the oil? I need to lower the out drive and unscrew the top and lower nuts right? Then pump it in from the bottom until it runs out the top nut. Then do I close the top nut and keep pumping until it fills the reserve?

adding my .02, the merc high performance oil is great stuff. very slippery and tacky, wouldn't use anything else. $9.00 a quart in alabama. and as j.kopec mentioned, the seal could be leaking. pulled my O/D to replace u-joints and found gear oil in the bellows.

I figured I would change teh oil and run the boat for a week or so and see if the level drops. Itf it does, then we've got a problem.

Sounds like a good plan....Keep a close eye on it though, if you let it run low on oil you will be asking for trouble.....JK

Is the seal is bad, is that repair more suited for a pro or can a home mechanic do it?

Todd,<br /> What style drive do you have alpha or bravo ?<br />Your oil should be blueish/green looking to be merc hi perf oil.Let me know about what drive and if theres no oil in bellows I can tell you where its goin<br /> Paul

Hello,<br /><br />I changed the drive oil lastnight. One thing I found it that when you are starting to fill the reserve, when you stop pumping, it still fills the reserve. <br /><br />Also, I used Penziol lower unit oil, is that a decent choice?
