I have a 1983 228 merc. Alpha 1 outdrive. So far this year everything has been running great. I check the Outdrive oil after every trip. Looks OK. The Upper half of the outdrive is developing a white chalky residue on the top 12" of the outdrive.
I run Merc. High Perf oil in the drive. Everything has been running ok. I've heard that the white chalky residue is a sign of an overheating outdrive. Any Ideas?? Is this normal? The outdrive was repainted 3 years ago when it was rebuilt and resealed. I have put about 4oo hours on it since then. Its primarily used for trolling. Let me know

stroker,

What you're seeing is completely normal.

There are some aftermarket "outdrive showers" that help eliviate the chalking.

Perhaps someone else has a link to a website.

I had the same problem.finally got tired of cleaning it off after each trip and purchased a Simrek driveshower.haven't had to touch it since.IMHO,one of the best $100 I've spent and takes about 15-30 minutes to install.Purchased mine at driveshowers.com.
