Hey Folks.

I'm continuing on the refurbish project for painting the Volvo Penta 280 aluminum outdrive that I've been restoring.

I've got it down to bare aluminum after stripping off all the old nasty paint. It's got some serious pitting that I plan to fill in with JB Weld soon but here's the question.

What do you reccomend to paint this drive? The boat will be in the Chesapeake bay (Brakish waters) and I may have it in a slip for most of the year.

Use some Zinc Chromate primer and then top coat it with your rattle can of choice. I personally like Rustoleum.

I would go with an enamel. You may also want to look into an adhesion promoter as aluminum does not like things to stick to it.

Hello Bob..

I would say ..

Sand blast your drive ( Again as I have posted NOT with Soda ).

Alumiprep correctly.. then
Alodine Correctly .. then

Here is the tricky part.. 2 part Underwater Epoxy Primer .. or Snap Primer ( Primer for Volvo paint .. and I would use Volvo paint and Clear ).

The thing with 2 part Epoxy primers is that you should scuff ALL primed surfaces before you paint/clear.

Look up the Volvo paint/clear application.

I would NOT put Zinc Chromate on drives myself..

YD.

PS. should you use Zincs..or Mags.. your choice..

Thanks guys! I really appreciate it. These forums are great!

I'm working on the pitting right now, using a gasket cleaner and paint stripper to really get in there before I fill in with JB Weld. My only problem now is that I can't seem to separate the intermediate and lower housings from the outdrive, so it seems difficult to clean within all the nooks and crannies around the mounting gear that attaches to the boat. I've got a dremel now, but it's slow going!

Spray bombs ? ..

I used Primicon and Trilux 33 in cans to do my last drives..worked great.. ( primicon is what Tri recommended ).
