I have done several searches on painting an outdrive and found quite a lot of information but one thing isn't clear.

After the zinc chromate primer...do you put the top coat on after it becomes tacky or allow it to fully cure? Any other tips always welcome

Whatever it says on the back of the can?

Right...that is where I looked first. The can says to either re-coat when tacky or wait 48 hours for a complete cure however, this is in reference to more coats of primer, not top coat. I read several things that said to let the primer fully cure and a couple that said you wanted the topcoat and primer to cure together.

which kind, 2 part zinc chromate, or 1 part rattle can zinc chromate. your attempting either a chemical lay up . or physical adhesion .after the flash window of a chemical layup your stuck with a physical lay up ,sanding will most likley be needed for good adhesion in a physical layup . proper prep is the key . i was looking at repainting my out drive and dreaded it .what kind of top coat ,some top coats need a finish primer for proper adhesion .

1 part rattle can, moeller green zinc chromate
Top coat is moeller arcrylic lacquer base engine paint

Regretably I didn't get any clear coat. Will the rattle can clear from an auto store work? Same procedure as the topcoat over the primer?
