I just purchased a 2011 Ebbtide 2200 Fun Cruiser and the engine runs great! This boat is six years old and the lower unit was recently replaced. The upper unit looks like it's 20 years old. What would cause this condition when the rest of the boat looks brand new?

it looks like the drive is getting hot... not due to a problem just from use... when they are used hard they get hot and the water will make the drive look like that because its "cooking" off... IMO I would get a drive shower on that thing ASAP to keep it cool and keep the bearings happy... google "mercruiser drive shower"

Looking at the upper portion of the outdrive, I think we know why the lower unit was recently replaced. Hot, hot, hot. Wonder if it was really low on oil or something like that?

I thought the paint was shot. Turns out it was a very heavy layer of calcium deposits. I was able to use acid and a lot of scrubbing and I was able to get it all off. Now the entire drive looks as good as the rest of the boat.

I'm pretty sure the boat was used at Lake Havasu where the temperatures are very high and the previous owner just didn't wipe down the drive when it was wet. The sun bakes on the deposits out there,

I'd be stripping that drive and checking bearing pre-loads and gear backlashes... Something internal is making that drive very hot, very very hot.

Got the driver shower installed. Very simple principle: water forced into the tubes from the bottom with no place to go except out the holes over the drive, keeping the driver covered in water while on plane.

Thank you for the advice.
