Ayuh,.... I've been doing alittle Playing with my outdrive,...
As some of you know,.. I have a mid-90s 4.3LX motor, with a mid-80s AlphaI outdrive on my 1974 Starcraft Islander....
With a Torque-Shift Prop,... 11" of pitch in Low gear,+ Up to 26"s in High gear....
I'm also a Trolling Fisherman,.... Trolling speed,+ excellent boat Control is what I want, more than Top-End....
I've been running it with a 1.65:1 ratio drive that I picked up a few years ago,... With it, I have to keep the Torque-Shift screws tightened to an overall high gear pitch of about 20"s..... It actually works Very Well,... Except I'm Not using to upper limits of my Prop...
Well,... I found signs of Water in the drive last fall, so it's going up to my Bud's place for a Reseal,+ general Check-Up....
But,... Before I send it out, I wanted to experiment with Ratios to see if I might want to regear it....
Soo,.....1st I bolted on a 1.50:1 outdrive,.....With a 15" prop,... It would Over-rev,... A 17" pitch worked pretty danm Good.....
But,.... That's the opposite direction I am wanting to Go...
Remember,... I'm trying to keep my trolling speeds in the 1mph to 2.5mph area,... Getting it to do this, with an engine speed of 1000rpms, instead of 650rpms will give better thrust for boat control,+ better motor behavior, ei; Better oil pressure, water flow, etc....
Well,..... Yesterday,... I bolted on a 1.98:1 ratio drive,.....
With the Torque-Shift prop,... Idle is 1mph,....Trimtabs fully Down gets it Sub-1mph....
Unfortunately,... Mathamatically, It should have pulled right at or very near the Right WOT rpms... But it Doesn't....
WOT was 5200rpms at only 35/37mph....
I lost 8/9mph,+ gained 500rpms.... Cruise was 3500/4000rpms at 25/28mph......
I'm now Thinking of trying a 1.84:1 ratio, or having my Bud at the PropShop pound in an Extra amount of Cup to the blades... 1 other option would be to try the 14" to 32" Torque-Shift prop....
Trouble is,... I don't have a set of 1.84:1 gears,+ the 4 Torque-Shift props I have are the 11" to 26" props......
I'll let you all know What I end up doing,+ How I get there,....
