Hi there. I just removed the outdrive from my 74 140 Mercruiser. I know it is supposed to be in gear when removing but I had it in Nuetral.
It came out quite easy.
Have I done it any harm?

Also, if I try and turn the splined U-Joint shaft coming out of the lower end unit I have about 10 degrees of free play before it "catches".
Is this within tolerances?

Thanks for the help, I think I will have more questions coming.

marc c,
If I adjust your post abit you don't have a splined u-joint shaft coming out of the lower end.

It's just a straight splined shaft,right ?

10 degrees is probably right.(for a prop shaft)

Unless you had the shift cable disconnected inside the boat,I know you have more questions coming,as you have bent some critical linkages.

we will all try to get you thru it.

DHP

Thanks for the prompt reply guys.

I'm probably not explaining myself well.
The shaft I'm talking about is the shaft that goes from the drive into the engine coupling.
It has 2 u-joints near the drive.

What shift parts would i have messed up, the one's in the gimble housing?
(I had the throttle wide open but had pushed the nuetral button)
