Hey, guys I recently removed my 165 Merc outdrive. I pushed the the arm all the way forward when I removed it BUT now I found out the gear was not engaged so basically just the throttle was all the way forward and the drive was in neutral. Can anyone tell me what affect this is going to have? Do i need to reinstall in neutral or is it just easier on the shift cable if its all the way forward? I have not attempted to put it back together yet. Below is a picture of how it looks at the moment the shifter does still shift so i dont think i broke the cable. but I am new to this.

It probably bent the shift shaft in the drive. Yes, everything has to be in forward (and not bent) when you put it back together..

hopefully it didnt bend the shift shaft  by putting it in forward it aligns the shift rods so they are in a straight line, IE 90 degrees to the plane of the bellhousing. that way they just slide straight apart. put the outdrive in forward and see if it is pointing straight ahead.
then shift the boat into forward and you will see that part is now facing rearward.

Wonderful :( any idea how hard it is to replace? I see the shift cable in the store but not sure what parts to order for the shaft.

There are two parts involved here. The upper shift shaft (21) and the intermediate shift shaft (22) here: http://www.mercruiserparts.com/Show...0065.png&inbr=2203&bnbr=60&bdesc=BELL+HOUSING if anything is bent is it is most likely the top of the intermediate ss. The upper is replaced by removing the arm and sliding it down out of the bell housing. The intermediate ss is replaced by splitting the outdrive and removing the cotter pin and pulling it out. If you have any questions about damage, take the parts to you local Merc dealer. While you have it apart it might be a good idea to replace the upper ss bushings (5) with the new style. Good luck.

From what I can see nothing looks bent. I will take some pictures tomorrow and throw them up here. What would happen if something is bent it would not shift right or at all.

Depends on what is bent and how badly, anything from difficult shifting to trouble removing and replacing the outdrive.

Don't panic ! If nothing looks bent just go ahead and put her in forward and see, if when the drive is attached, everything works as it should ( do not seal or use new gaskets, etc - just bolt her up ). If not then start fixing it. If it is good - shifts to free, lock, reverse lock per the shifter, remove then re-install properly with you new gaskets, 5200 and seals etc.
