Trying to pull outdrive
Chevy 350 engine pulled, flyweel housing pulled, 6 bolts on transum removed from outdrive.

The exhaust pipes going to the outdrive apear to be connected with know way to remove them. Thought the outdrive would be pulled straight out from the outside. Is this incorrect? What steps do I take to completly remove the outdrive?

Does anybudy have a drawing on how everything is attached?

Thanks,

Clay

Re: Outdrive removal

if its an alpha mercruiser outdrive you have to have it in forward gear at the shift lever to pull it and sometimes it takes a little persuasion with a screwdriver carefully placed in between or a good jar to break the seal free then pull it straight back and out the exhaust hose stays connected to the tilt portion of the gimble housing ... good luck

Re: Outdrive removal

I read on here a few years ago,, about placing a block of wood , between the bell housing and outdrive,, then gently dropping it a few times ! It has worked for me many a time,, just be ready to catch the outdrive when it breaks free !!!

Why are you removing it? The reason I ask is that if its just to get at the u-joints, you don't need to pull the whole drive off....just the upper gearcase assembly.

forward gear first....then you may want to take the lower unit off and then pull the upper.....it's a bit lighter coming off the transom this way

While you're at it you can replace the impeller

He has a Volvo 280! Have to remove the back cover and disconnect the shift cable. Been too long since I removed one but the rest is simple to just remove the leg.

Re: Outdrive removal

Follow this thread. But don't unbolt the upper gear box.

http://forums.iboats.com/showthread.php?t=309095

Disconnect the exhaust bellows

Also remove #32 in this link

remove 36 & 37 in this link. Remove the locking bolt, drive the pin in with the steering helmet turned to one side or the other to allow room.

I would build a rolling outdrive stand and have it support the outdrive while you roll it straight back.

Bruce is right, get a manual.:)

Let us know how it goes.

Re: Outdrive removal

Had major problem removing outdrive today. 106 deg when I got off work. Should cool down this week-end and I'll try again.

Captmello/Bruceb58

Have reviewed your guys info and now have a good idea of how to do this.
But there is one thing I forgot to ask. How much do you think the outdrive weighs?

Re: Outdrive removal

I'm not sure of the weight. 125+Lbs maybe. I've never tried to lift mine.

Closer to 100 lbs. 2 people can easily manage it.

Thanks again guys
