Re: Outdrive removal

Tried to remove pivet pin and was unsucessful. Have already removed the retaining bolt. Used socket and small sledge hammer to drive it out pushing it from the outside in. I know it's pressed in, put it seams like I'm hitting pretty hard. Is their a trick to this? Just to be sure I removed the upper gear box and have the steering mechanism turned all the way to one side. Should I just use more elbow grease?

Re: Outdrive removal

there's always a bigger hammer!

Also, if you remove the lower first you can pull the upper off by yourself. It's not going to be half the weight but it will be less. also might want to remove the prop so you don't damage it

If you need an outdrive stand I posted one. The topic name was "Quick and Easy OUTDRIVE Stand".

Re: Outdrive removal

FYI. The pivet pins push out from inside.

Had to cut fork that hemit attaches to so I could get to pin from inside. Right one is coming out O.K. On the left side the retaining allen head bolt will not come out. Will be trying to use an easy-out latter to day to remove.

With hemit out of way and upper gear box removed. Was able to tilt outdrive enough to get to exhuast pipe bolts that were hiden by outdrive. Removed the four bolts but exhuast pipes are frozen and will not come out. May have to distroy pipes and chisel pipes out. Then the only two things left to get to transum is the tilt unit that is stuck and removing the streering arm. Retaining arm bolt is severaly corroded.

Chiseling and grinding is the last option, would anyone have any thoughts on how to or not to do these things?

Re: Outdrive removal

Hate to be the one to tell you, but you need a new transom shield, tilt mechanism, steering fork, and exhaust tube and probably the flywheel cover if the end where the ujoint bellows attaches is corroded away too.
What you have there is a corroded, unusable mess.

Re: Outdrive removal

Too bad you never posted pics of your outdrive before. You never once mentioned how corroded it is. The pins will drive in from the outside. Its the only way, except cutting the yoke...

Heat from a torch is your best help for the corrosion. Heat the metal around the item you are trying to loosen up. But not too hot.

I don't live by or boat in salt water so I do not have experience with it.

Sorry not much help.

Edit- Don S beat me to your posting. Good thing however. Now you can stop wasting time trying to take that mess apart. Check ebay, there are many used replacement parts out there.

Is that what that white stuff is L.O.L. What's a transum sheild?

Don't you just love laymen.:p

Good news is upper gear box looks excellent. Think lower gear box is also O.K

Re: Outdrive removal

Thanks Don, thats what I thought.

Have ground of tilt unit and the streering arm on inside of boat that conects to the steering cable. Not sure how to remove corroted exhaust. Can not get angle grinder in there. Will try a torch latter today but don't think it will make a differance. The only other thing I can think of is a chisel.

Any other ideas that will help me remove exhaust and save the transum sheild. I think the sheild may be O.K. if I don't damage it removing exhaust. Will inspect it closer after removal and sandblasting (nut-blast)

Littel slower and a few more parts to replace then I was hopping for. Though it's a hole lot better then before I started. Had thought I was going to have to replace everything at that time.

Re: Outdrive removal

Thought you wanted to remove the drive from the transom shield. Apparently not?

Re: Outdrive removal

Removing outdrive was to unbolt the exhaust bolts so the hole assy could be removed. It turns out that with upper gearbox and hemit removed you can tilt the outdrive enough to get to the exhaust bolts hidden behind the outdrive. Will be replacing transum and rebuilding everything.

Volvo Penta Stern Drives 1968-1991 Repair Manual Powered by Ford, GM or Volvo 4 Cylinder, V6, V8 - Seloc

Does anyone know if this manual sold by iboats covers the volvo-penta 280 outdrive and the 350 GM motor I have. From the name I would think so.
